Flinders Link Project

It’s good to see the future of South Australia’s infrastructure is alive and well. We are excited to be playing our part in the Flinders Link Project with long-term partners Diona Civil – one of the contractors for this exciting project.

Gateway South, a joint venture between Fulton Hogan and Laing O’Rourke, were awarded the major works contract. The project will support around 55 full-time equivalent jobs per year, over the life of the project.

Investing for the Future

The Australian and South Australian Governments are jointly funding the $125 million Flinders Link Project to extend the existing Tonsley rail line to the Flinders Medical Centre. This will create new connections to the health, innovation and education precincts.

Due for completion in late 2020, the Flinders Link Project will improve public transport, cycling and walking connectivity between the Flinders Precinct and the Tonsley Precinct.

Flinders Link will also improve connectivity between Adelaide CBD and the Flinders Precinct and Tonsley Precinct.

The project will include:

  • A 650-metre extension of the current Tonsley rail line, including an elevated single track over Sturt Road, Laffers Triangle, and Main South Road. This will link Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders University to the passenger rail network;
  • Construction of a new Flinders Station and removal of the existing Tonsley Station; and,
  • An integrated shared pedestrian/cycle path adjacent to the rail line from the new ramp located at the corner of Sturt Road and Birch Crescent to the new Flinders Station.

Piling works began in July along the length of the project site, which started on the western side of Main South Road and is progressively moving towards the northern end of the project site.

A 25m-high continuous flight auger piling rig, crane, excavator, and concrete trucks will be used during piling works. This will result in a total of 147 piles, or support columns, for the project.

Greater Connectivity

The Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government, Stephan Knoll, stated that the extension of the Tonsley line will better enable South Australians to access the Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders University through the public transport network.

The Federal Member for Boothby, Nicolle Flint, says the project will provide exciting new public transport options for residents, students, and staff, and finally connect the University, FMC and Tonsley with the city and Adelaide Train Station.

“This project will create local construction jobs and support future investment and growth in our local area,” Ms Flint says.
