How to choose the right machine for your project

There are numerous ways to go through the process to choose the right machine for your project. First, you’ll need to ask yourself a couple questions before you start.

  1. Do I need to demolish a structure or hire a demolition team?

Most project sites have existing structures that need to be demolished and removed from the site before any earthmoving can occur. This may call for a demolition team to start onsite prior to the civil construction contractors. Once that has been completed we can move on to the job requirements.

  2. What type of needs should be considered when hiring construction equipment? A few questions to ask yourself are:

    – What size machine will fit on the worksite?
    – What time constraints do I have for this project?
    – What tasks do I need to complete? (Am I trenching? If so, how will I get rid of the excess earth?)
    – Do I need to landscape or grade the terrain?
    – Will an excavator be efficient at loading trucks or will I need a skid steer or wheel loader?
    – Will the weather affect any stage of the project? If so, do I need to get extra equipment to solve problems or do we wait it out?

  3. Are there any legal requirements for my site?

PPE is a legal requirement on many construction sites. The requirements per site vary based on the risks associated with the job. This includes safety boots, safety glasses, hi-visibility clothing, and hard-hats. In special cases you may require protective gloves, ear protection, harnesses, sunscreen and respiratory equipment.

  4. Can I use attachments to make my machine more efficient to hire less machinery?

Of course you can! The best way to get the most out of your machine is to have a variety of attachments that can be used for the job. For example, if you are demolishing a building before you start trenching then a pulveriser, cutter crusher, rotating grapple, or a multi-grab bucket may be a good option alongside your set of digging buckets.
